Daedalian award ceremony

Every now and then I get to attend things as a spouse, but it’s hard to keep the photographer in me down…so in support of my husband and the achievements of his group, I snapped a few photos at this pretty important ceremony – a landmark moment for Moody AFB and the Maintenance Group. So, congrats 23 MXG, 2011 Daedalian winners (best maintenance group in the Air Force). Here are some key moments from the 1000 plus crowd, including several retired aviators attending as members of the Order of Daedalians, that brought energy to the award ceremony. Hoorah ; )

On the Line

One of the most fabulous things about being a photographer in an Air Force world is the unique opportunities that come up to work in and around the things that not everyone has a chance to – case in point the A-10, better known as the “Warthog”. Because my husband is in the Fighter Maintenance career field, I’ve been around fighter jets for the last 11 years. I know the basic terminology. I’ve seen the hard work that it takes to fly them and keep them fit to fly. I’ve glanced up in the sky countless times to see if I can identify which jet is rumblingcoursingstreaking through the sky overhead of every Air Force base where we’ve been assigned. But of all the aircraft I’ve had the opportunity to be in and around, it’s the A-10 that seems, to me, to have the most personality. It could be that Moody AFB is the only active duty Wing in the Air Force (the 23rd “Flying Tigers” – tracing back to the WWII) that still bears the painted shark’s teeth on the aircraft. It could be that the people who fly and work on/with the A-10 seem to really love this aircraft because it can be damaged in ways you don’t talk about at parties and still fly home safely. Or it could be the stories I hear from all branches of service indicating that the A-10s are the jets that bring a collective sigh of relief and three cheers among those on the ground when they appear out of the ether, flying steadily into the fray. Or, you know, it could be that I got to get really (really) up close and personal with the jet. I suspect it’s a combination of all of the above. And while I’m not one to play favorites most of the time, I really dig the fact that this jet has teeth. And knows how to use them.

So, thanks to the Hinman family and all those who made this photo shoot possible – from the ones who towed it into the position I requested, to the ones who signed the paperwork to allow me to cross that red line and not get arrested, and to my husband who assisted me in the swampy Georgia heat to capture this jet, this family and these moments.

Here are just a few of my favorites. I am so loving that I had an incredible sky and a full moon at the end. What an opportunity!

Meet the Lesho family who gave me the opportunity for a fantastically fun photo shoot with them and their super-fun (and super-energetic) son! My favorite part was the tricycle they brought with them – which happened to belong to dad when he was little! How very cool.

Saying goodbye is never easy. But sometimes it’s necessary. Let the photography serve as memories to hold until it’s time to say hello again, and welcome them back with loving arms.

(FYI, in case anyone is wondering, pre-deployment and reunification sessions where the soldier is in uniform is acceptable and in keeping with the AF PA st…andards. I checked!)

Saying Goodbye

Here’s a sneak peek from my session with Cody and Rachelle {saying goodbye}. Yes, one of the toughest jobs of a military spouse is sending the loved one off to war. And it happens a lot around here. And I do mean A LOT. This is my fourth pre-deployment session this week. And while they do get easier, we still don’t like to say goodbye. Thankfully we have pictures to bring some joy to these moments. Here’s one of the ones I had {in my head} that I wanted to post as a preview. More to come!

Meet the Lamberts

Any family that comes wearing Keds and Cowboy Boots, motorcycle in tow, without any prompting from me is my kind of family!! This photo session was very cool – but not just because of that. This was one of those moments when I realize how important my job is. The Lamberts are a military family and Rodney is getting ready to deploy in June. And I had the honor, the privilege, to mark this moment in time for them – capturing something tangible that they – the boys, Kelley, and Rodney, can look to during the months of separation. Yes, I am lucky. I get to record these moments – life, family, love – the ones that matter most. And because I am also a military spouse I understand doubly how important those moments are. Thank you, Rodney. For being willing to serve, away from family. I hope these photographs play some small part in keeping you company until you come safe home.

Best Friends

Ok - so who knew a “turning two” birthday party could be so much fun? I bounced in the bouncy castle, ate Thomas the Tank Engine Cake, and got to photograph some really adorable children! Most especially I love the ones of these girls. Best friends? Yes. Can you tell? The first photo (an out-take for sure) had them tangled in each other’s hair and yelping, trying to get settled enough to smile (I left this one off, to protect the innocent). But smile they did! And these are especially poignant because, military life being what it is, this is their last summer together in V. So these pictures are meaningful, but also soooo cute. Gotta love em.

Meet the McKinleys!

Dictionary.com defines Lifestyle (as a noun) as “A way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group”. Very recently, the word “lifestyle” has also begun to be used as an adjective to describe a type or style of photography that is, essentially, capturing moments in time during the course of a day, weekend, or single activity that are more candid than posed and are best viewed together to communicate a story. Or, in my mind, the story. An important distinction.

There are many styles of Lifestyle photography (go figure), and each photographer interprets it in their own way. For me, as you’ll see, I consider Lifestyle photography to be mostly capturing the story of you. Your child. Your family. The moments and the in between. The day to day activities. Not always smiles. Not always looking at the camera. Just being. But I always throw in elements of glamour, posing and fun, because, well, when the kids are this cute, I just can’t help it!

Enter the McKinleys. Erin and her family live in Greenville SC and Erin is an old friend from grade school and high school who has been following my work on facebook for awhile now (Hooray for facebook!). When she asked me to come out and photograph her family before her husband left for nine weeks of basic training with the Air National Guard, I jumped at the chance. Of course I was motivated by wanting to reconnect with Erin after 14 years (yes, it’s really been that long. Are we old or what?) but also motivating me was the fact that, oh by the way, her kids are ADORABLE.

But what’s really amazing for me about lifestyle photography, especially the weekend long kind, is that I really get to know the family, the children, to know the moments that are important, to earn the trust of the children, to spend a few minutes with each of them alone, getting them to be who they are, to let down their guard, but with just enough pull because I am still a cool adult and not quite a parental figure. It really makes for some amazing, and honest, results.

So, here’s a glimpse (just my favorites) of what happens when a family spends a fun filled weekend, day and night, with me (and my camera) around for every moment and everything in between!
