An Unbridled Bride

Word of mouth works wonders. When my father in law took my Real Women article (from the July edition of Rangefinder Magazine) into work with him, Tanya saw the article, read it, and immediately contacted me to see if I would be in her area anytime soon. Her wish: to put that wedding dress back on (7 years later I believe) and do a session (a la Real Women) in Philadelphia…ending in a fountain. Hooray! My travel plans happily coincided with her request and so she became my first Philadelphia “Unbridled” bride. We had so much fun! These are some of my favorite (and very stylized) images from the session. Enjoy! And thanks Tanya – you were awesome!

A Model Bride

Stacey was willing to play along with an idea I had for a “juliet” wedding session. We shopped for a dress and found this amazing one for $99. I called the Dayton Art Institute to see if we could use their Gothic Cloister for the session. It was simply amazing – pretty much exactly what I had envisioned, with Stacey’s experienced help! I hope never to stop doing sessions just for fun – they allow me the creative freedom to just take photos with no pressure, to experiment and to learn for the next time!

One of my favorite things to photograph is women in their wedding dress – before the wedding, right after the wedding, 10 years later – just about any time! I offer a session called “Unbridled” that is a chance for a woman to have a little fun in dress – in a stress-free environment, in creative locations, and in ways that emphasize the natural beauty of each woman.

Summer slipped back into her wedding dress for a session 3 short months after the wedding. And I got some pretty cool shots!

One of the things I love doing is working with women. And especially women who scheme to surprise their husbands. Lisa decided to surprise her husband with portraits 9 years after their wedding! So we spent some time doing some creative things in a church near here. Congratulations once more to Lisa (and Brian)!

Beautiful Bride

The more photography I do, the more I realize that there are certain types of sessions that I really, really enjoy – and bridal sessions are totally one of those. I love working with women, as evidenced by my Real Women Project and I suppose the message is the same – you are beautiful, exactly as you are. And especially on your wedding day (or slightly before). Lisa is no exception. She was stunning in her classic slim dress and sleek hair, and she knew how to pose! Some of the images are just sooo cool! We shot for 3 hours in locations I had never used before and some that I had. And it was so worth the time. I was able to really get creative, using natural and alternative light. And I was able to work the Dayton skyline into a few – perfect end to the day.

And the only reason this was possible was because Lisa (and Greg) despite living in Seattle, think that photography is among the most important things you can invest in when it comes to your wedding. And so Lisa made the time to do this bridal session after she got into town but on the week of the wedding (in fact, as I type this, I cannot believe her wedding is tomorrow!) She was willing to risk the dress getting a little dirty to get the really cool shots – and as a photographer I appreciate that bravery. And I appreciate Greg and Lisa the same way I appreciated Brandy and Francisco – for making the time to do the stuff that creates the lasting memories. And for believing that photography is art, and not just anyone can do it.

WPPI Plus Class Workshop Day One – Las Vegas

Learning new techniques in Vegas…oh man! What a very very cool experience. Much gratitude goes to Alycia Alvarez and KJ Images for instructing the class with plenty of hands-on and practical tips and techniques. I learned so much that I was later able to apply to my own work – and I came back from the workshop totally inspired to take it to the next level. Looking back (as I update this blog post) I realize that several tips from KJ have been instrumental in my upping the game on my wedding and even portrait photography – from the use of studio lighting outdoors to using moody available light and locations indoors as well as the use of textures to overlay the images. I use all of these things regularly now. So many thanks for the inspiration KJ! You Rock!
