Studio Newborn Sessions

Many of the newborn sessions I do are in the homes of my clients. It’s definitely a good choice because everyone is comfortable in that setting, for sure (here’s an example of a recent in-home newborn session that I photographed). But I love it when I get the chance to do studio newborn sessions in my home studio, too! Studio sessions are fantastic for newborn sessions because they allow me to have more control over the location and lighting since I know where the light comes from and also can use the studio backdrops to create classic studio images. I also love my studio because I have lots of newborn blankets, as well as boxes, bows, chairs, wraps, baskets, nests and all manner of props I can use to create a sweet and cozy place for the littles to fall asleep.

This newborn was less than 7 days old when I photographed him – and look at that hair! I used a neutral newborn wrap with a little rustic chic feel and this great torn fabric rug I bought at Anthropologie. He slept, and smiled, and yawned, and generally was perfect.

For family images during newborn sessions, I decided to change up the backdrop to solid black to create some beautifully classic black and white photos. Using studio light and a black backdrop is really a great way to focus the light exactly where I want it and get timeless images!
